We Care Solar

We Care Solar supports global efforts to eliminate preventable deaths in childbirth by addressing the challenge of poor to non-existent energy in maternal health facilities. They developed a Solar Suitcases - a compact, rugged, easy-to-use solar electric kit for midwives and doctors in rural health centers in Africa and Asia. We Care Solar training programs build local capacity in solar installation and maintenance. By partnering with agencies working to reduce maternal mortality (such as UNICEF, Save the Children, and Pathfinder) they reach some of the most remote clinics in the world. The Solar Suitcase replaces candles, kerosene lanterns, and lights from cell phones. It offers bright LED lights, a fetal heart rate monitor, and a 12-volt DC charging station, enabling mothers to access around-the-clock care and health workers to function more efficiently and effectively. To date, We Care Solar has deployed 1,800 Solar Suitcases and served more than 700,000 mothers and newborns, primarily in West Africa, East Africa, the Philippines, and Nepal. The United Nations awarded We Care Solar the inaugural "Powering the Future We Want" award in 2015.
